The Twinscope se by Interphase can scan a beam horizontally or vertically ahead of a boat over a 90-degree arc, just like underwater sonic radar. The Forward Vertical scanning mode gives you an underwater sonar image of what's ahead from just under the surface to directly below the boat. In the Forward Horizontal scanning mode, the Interphase Forward Scan Color Twinscope se Sonar with 2 Transom Mount Transducers electronically steers a searchlight-like beam from port to starboard across the bow, fish finding and picking up targets in the 12-degree beam.

The phased array acoustic technology or phased array ultrasound technology used by the Color Twinscope Forward Scanning Sonar depth / fish finder was first developed and patented by Interphase Technologies for marine use.
Acoustic beams can be directed in a nearly unlimited number of directions, depending on the array's signal phasing. Since the acoustic beam in the phased array doesn't require any moving parts and is steered electronically, the sonar flasher can scan and re-scan a large area quickly and reliably. The color imaging display of the changing data between subsequent scans takes on an almost animated quality when the echo sounder shows rapidly changing bottom conditions or movement of underwater targets such as fish.
The Color Twinscope se uses two phased arrays, so two transducers are required for transom mount applications, each containing a phased array. One of the phased arrays is positioned to scan vertically from straight ahead to directly below the boat, while the other array is positioned to scan forward horizontally from side to side. It is important to position the transducer of your fish sonar / depth finder so that it has as clear a view as possible of the water directly below and ahead of your boat.
